Are You Ready for the Future of Email Security?
Google is releasing a powerful new feature that will keep your Gmail inbox a safe, spam-free place… and it’s called RETVec. Are you ready for the future of email security?
So, what is RETVec?
Well, let’s make it simple. RETVec stands for Resilient and Efficient Text Vectorizer. Translation: a feature that allows Gmail the ability to spot and prevent spam emails from entering your inbox.
How RETVec Works
Spammers have become good at changing their ways and using smart methods to avoid detection. Some get past our defenses by using purposeful typos, invisible letters, and something called LEET substitution (e.g. “3xpl4in3d” instead of “explained”). But RETVec has been taught to be resistant to all these tricks.
According to Google, they can translate words or phrases into real numbers. They use these numbers for further analysis, predictions, and word similarity detection. Simply put, it’s similar to giving Gmail an enhanced spam detector.
How does this help you? With the arrival of RETVec, Gmail’s spam detection rate has increased by a remarkable 38%. Plus, Gmail is experiencing an almost 20% decrease in false positives.
What’s the Catch?
Some of you might be wondering if there’s a catch. There is something you should be aware of, particularly if your company sends out promotional emails.
Amidst RETVec’s heightened alertness, a few authentic emails can get lost in the crossfire. To make sure your emails are going to the people you intend them to, it’s a good idea to monitor your email analytics.
Better security isn’t the only benefit of a feature like RETVec. It’s more efficient too. According to Google, the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) usage of the model decreased by an astounding 83%. Smaller models often translate to faster delivery, and lower computing costs, which is revolutionary for on-device models and large-scale applications. A win-win situation.
Cybercriminals use spam as a weapon, but RETVec can help keep us safer. It keeps our data safe and our inboxes junk-free by blocking these dangerous emails.
You shouldn’t feel too left out if you don’t use Gmail. It’s possible in the future that Microsoft and other email providers will offer similar levels of security.
