Are You Really Installing Zoom… or is it Malware?
Zoom is one of the first names that comes to mind when you think about applications for remote work and online communication. When you actually go to download the Zoom app, are you really installing Zoom… or is it malware?
The truth is, the popularity growth of Zoom has left the door open for hackers. They are using the recognition of the name to steal sensitive data.
So far, researchers have found six convincing-looking download sites. They are not the real app. The page designs intend to entice you to download FAKE Zoom software. When really, it contains ‘info stealers’ and other sorts of malware (malicious software).
If you mistakenly use these sites and believe you’re downloading a Zoom update… you risk having important data stolen. Perhaps banking info, passwords, or browser history.
Some of these cyber criminals are capable of stealing your multi-factor authentication data. This will grant them access to your most sensitive data.
The researchers found these ‘stealer-logs’ for sale on the dark web. There, other criminals can buy them and use them to gain access to business networks.
Once a cybercriminal has access to your network, all of the information you store becomes a target. In severe situations, this can make you susceptible to ransomware attacks or data theft.
Although these bogus websites might be quite convincing, you can prevent being duped by following these instructions:
How to Prevent Being Fooled by Fake Websites
- Before you download Zoom or any application for that matter, verify the website’s address. Is it what you were expecting? If you follow a link in an email to reach the website, make sure you’re certain that it’s from the real company.
- Go through the rest of the website. Scan it for anything that doesn’t ring true, such as misspelled words or awkward layouts.
- Make sure your security software is up to date and continuously looking for malware and suspicious activities.
- Plan to roll out this advice to the rest of your business.
