Bot Malware is a Major Security Risk
Bot malware is a major security risk. The “bots” we are mentioning might make you think of the great AI chatbots we’ve been seeing all over the news recently. But alas, they are not.
This isn’t a good news story, though. Bots in general are just automated programs. But bot malware is a concerning new security danger you need to protect your company from.
Malware bots are very dangerous because they collect entire user profiles or complete snapshots of your ID and details. This would make it possible for online criminals to bypass tough security measures like Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
Bot Crimes and How to Protect Yourself
In most cases, if a criminal is able to obtain your login and password, they still will be unable to access your account because they lack access to your MFA method. But now, if they have access to your entire profile and can use your device settings and cookies to mislead security systems, they can effectively turn off your MFA.
If your profile information is stolen, it can be sold on the dark web for as little as $5.
This method doesn’t even require the work of a highly skilled cybercriminal. Your information is easily accessible, and anyone can use it for phishing emails, scams, and other illegal activities.
Since 2018, 26.6 million usernames and passwords have been stolen, giving access to accounts like Microsoft, Google, and Facebook.
All of this means that there are steps you must take immediately to keep your profiles and company safe from bot infection.
- Keep your antivirus software up to date and running at all times.
- To keep your login information secure, use Multi-Factor Authentication and a password manager.
- Moreover, encrypt all of your files so that there won’t be much to steal if someone manages to access your profile.
