How to Stay Safe When Using Public Wi-Fi
In today’s post, we will be going over tips on how to stay safe when working on public Wi-Fi.
Let’s get into it.
As mentioned already, public Wi-Fi is extremely convenient, especially when you’re on the go.
But it can also be a security risk if you’re not careful.
By the end of this video, you’ll learn how to protect your sensitive information and safeguard your online privacy whenever you work on public Wi-Fi.
Tips on Staying Safe on Public Wi-Fi
Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
The number one thing to do is to get a VPN.
A VPN is an essential tool for protecting your online privacy and securing your data when working on public Wi-Fi. A VPN encrypts your internet traffic, making it difficult for hackers and snoopers to intercept your sensitive information.
There are many VPN services available, both free and paid, so make sure to choose one that suits your needs.
Avoid Accessing Sensitive Information
If you randomly pop into a coffee shop to get some work done and you haven’t installed a VPN, I highly suggest you avoid accessing sensitive information during that time.
When working on public Wi-Fi, it’s best to avoid accessing sensitive information such as your bank account or logging into your company email.
If you need to access this sensitive information, make sure that the website you’re visiting is encrypted.
A good tip is to look for the “http” in the URL, which indicates that the site is using SSL encryption to protect your data.
Keep Your Software Up to Date
You should definitely be updating your software on a regular basis. Keeping your software up to date is important for protecting yourself from security vulnerabilities.
Make sure to install updates for your operating system, web browser, and any other software you use. These updates often include security patches that can protect you from new threats.
Turn Off File Sharing
Next, you want to make sure you’re turning off file sharing. File sharing is a convenient feature when you’re on a private network, but it can be a security risk on public Wi-Fi.
Turn off file sharing on your computer to prevent others on the network from accessing your files.
Use Two-Factor Authentication
If you’ve been a subscriber of this channel for a while, you know I always say one of the best things you can do to protect not only your company’s network, but your own network is to use two-factor authentication.
Two-Factor Authentication or Multi-Factor Authentication adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts by requiring a second form of authentication, such as a code sent to your phone.
If someone does manage to steal your password, they won’t be able to access your account without the second factor.
Use a Firewall
Lastly, I would suggest using a firewall.
A firewall is a security feature that blocks unauthorized access to your computer from the internet.
Make sure that your firewall is turned on when working on public Wi-Fi to prevent hackers from gaining access to your computer.
Working on public Wi-Fi can be risky, but by following these tips, you can protect your sensitive information and safeguard your online privacy.
Remember to use a VPN, avoid accessing sensitive information, keep your software up to date, turn off file sharing, use two-factor authentication, and use a firewall.
