Protecting Yourself from Sophisticated Cyber Attacks
Protecting Yourself from Sophisticated Cyber Attacks: Have you ever tried to purchase tickets for a big event only to find the seller’s website crashing due to so many people attempting to do the same thing at the same time?
The server is overwhelmed with traffic it cannot handle, which leads to the ticket site crashing momentarily.
Criminal Distributed Denial of Service attacks or DDoS exploits the same idea.
When DDoS attacks, the goal is to overwhelm a system and cause it to crash by flooding it with internet traffic.
Once the attack starts, the customers are unable to access the company’s services. It can result in a brief failure, but sometimes more serious. The average DDoS attack last year lasted 50 minutes.
50 minutes might not seem like much time, but it is enough to create angry customers or put a stop to business operations. Downtime is very costly.
Why DDoS Attacks Are Getting More Dangerous
The really bad news is that DDoS attacks are happening more frequently, are more sophisticated, and are lasting a lot longer.
The largest reported DDoS attack was recently blocked. At its height, it attacked the server with over 71 million requests per second. Prior to this, the largest known attack involved 46 million requests per second.
Even worse, more companies are reportedly becoming the target of DDoS attacks, for which criminals are demanding astronomical ransom payments.
What do these attacks mean for you?
The best thing you can do is check to make sure all your security measures are up-to-date and working properly. Are you setting up firewalls with DDoS monitoring and prevention? And does your team fully understand the significance of maintaining alertness?
